Sesquicentennial Grand Parade & Street Dance Scheduled for May 10th

A full day of activities in celebration of the county’s 150th birthday has been planned by the Historical Commission for Saturday, May 10th.

The festivities will begin at 12 Noon at the Fairgrounds with a Sesquicentennial Grand Parade featuring an assortment of decorated floats, horses, antique cars, motorcycles and a 1911 Fire Truck. The Grand Parade will be led by American Legion Color Guard Post 350 under the command of Don James, in honor of American forces serving in Afghanistan and Iraq and all veterans of all of America’s wars. Some of Clay County’s oldest organizations will be represented. The Boy Scouts, including Troop #25, the oldest in the county, and the ladies of the VIA, the oldest Woman’s Club in Florida, are going to be in the parade.

A Band Concert by a combined high school band under the direction of Burt Creswell will be held following the parade. Included in the concert will be a selection of songs from 1858, the year the county was created.

Children can enjoy several old-fashioned games including a sack race, egg-and-spoon race and table games such as Jacob’s Ladder, wooden whirligigs, clay marbles, Bilbo catchers, and tops.

Science fiction fans, baby-boomers and children can also enjoy an appearance by Gill-Man from the 1954 movie “The Creature From the Black Lagoon”. The movie was partially filmed in Green Cove Springs and was the first underwater 3-D film.

Participants won’t have to leave the fairgrounds if they get hungry, the Cattleman’s Association will have the kitchen open for lunch.

The fun will continue on Saturday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. when a Street Dance will be held in Spring Park, Green Cove Springs featuring J.R. Roberts and Band. J.R. Roberts was formerly the lead vocalist for numerous bands and has toured with many rock icons including the Doobie Brothers and Charlie Daniels. J.R’s music has been described as a blend of roots music of the South with today’s country and yesterday’s rock and roll.

The evening will be capped off with birthday cupcakes and glow-sticks in celebration of the county’s birthday.

Cancellation of June 24, 2008 BCC Meeting
At the BCC Meeting of April 8, 2008, the Board of County Commissioners took action to cancel the BCC Meeting of June 24, 2008. The Florida Association of Counties Annual Conference will be held 6/24 thru 6/27 and several of the commissioners will be out of town in attendance at that conference.  If you have any question, please contact Brenda Johns at 904-269-6388.

Citizen Advisory Boards
Clay County offers a wide variety of voluntary citizen Advisory Boards that enable citizens to get involved in their community.  The goal of the boards and committees is to ensure that Clay County continues to grow economically and that our communities continue to prosper.  If interested, you may submit our online application.

Clay County Division of Engineering Lane Closings: Week of April 27 to May 3
Plantation Oaks West (road widening improvements for School “Z”) - both the eastbound and the westbound lanes just west of the Whitfield subdivision may experience lane closings from 9 am to 3 pm starting Monday thru Friday and extending through the beginning of May. Flagging operations will be in effect during these closures. Delays are expected during this construction.

CR 214 (proposed leveling and overlaying of the existing road) - Both lanes of CR 214 between Canyon Rd. and Colorado Ave may experience alternate lane closings from 9 am to 3 pm starting Tuesday. Flagging operations will be in effect during these closures. Slight delays should be expected during this construction

Unforeseen construction circumstances or inclement weather could delay or postpone activities and estimated completion dates on this list.


FDOT Lane Closures
PROJECT UPDATE—DOCTORS INLET BRIDGE WIDENING: 
The following update has been provided by the Florida Department of Transportation on the progress of the Doctors Inlet Bridge/U.S. 17 widening project between Creighton Road and Milwaukee Avenue in Orange Park. U. S. 17 is being widened from four to six lanes with an anticipated completion date in the winter of 2010.  Below is a summary of what has occurred since the project began on November 12, 2007 and what you can expect in the immediate future. Projected timetables could change depending on weather and unanticipated field situations.

Progress to date:
*The project is about 14 percent completed.
*Roadway items which have been finished include removing the median traffic separators and curbing at the north and south ends of the bridge. Temporary pavement has been installed for traffic shifts.

Anticipated activities in the next three months:
*Starting on March 13, the sidewalk next to the southbound lanes will be closed for about a year. This is for pedestrian safety to allow the contractor to widen the bridge next to the southbound lanes. The protective barrier will be removed. Cranes, related construction equipment and materials will be stored in area.
*Drainage improvement work continues north and south of the bridge.
